In the pretext of widespread crimes, the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission on Saturday said it has apprehended 359 individuals for alleged involvement in organised and widespread crimes in Addis Ababa surrounding areas.

In a statement it released on Saturday, the commission unveiled organized crimes involving killing of people, stealing of children and vehicles after stabbing drivers to death and trafficking of firearms and fake bank notes are on the rise.

The Federal Police’s statement said members of the outlawed Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) were among those suspects who were largely engaged in the widespread and increasing crimes in Addis Ababa.

Police said so far they have apprehended 135 TPLF members who were ethnically profiled in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas in the notion of widespread crimes without providing evidence.

This is aimed at declaring a total war to marginalise Tigrayans and other non-Amhara ethnic groups further in Ethiopia by the Abiy administration.

Testifying before Congress on Wednesday, 10 March 2021, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said “he wanted to see forces from neighbouring Eritrea and those from the Amhara region replaced in Tigray by security forces that will respect human rights and not “commit acts of ethnic cleansing.”
